Maryland Foodways - 130 years in 13 courses

I don’t know about you but I love a good back story.  My favorite cookbooks are those that have a story to tell behind the recipe.  If you are like me, you enjoy knowing the quirks, history and reason a dish became a family tradition, maybe that story about the crazy aunt who had to stir the pot left to right or it wouldn’t turn out at its best.  Do I have an interesting evening of food, recipes and history at the Women’s Exchange.

The Maryland Humanities Council cordially invites all to Dine, Dish and Discover, a unique culinary evening of home cooking and a look at Maryland’s food history. Food writer and critic Richard Gorelick along with Chef Irene Smith of the Women’s Exchange and Super Freaks food truck are the featured speakers.

Guests will sample 13 different Maryland dishes – one for each decade that the Women’s Exchange has been interwoven in people’s lives at the historic Charles Street home.  On Tuesday, December 3, 2013 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Woman’s Industrial Kitchen all will gather and enjoy foods of bygone era and modern day...get all the details and menu HERE.

Hailing a cab with Streit's Matzo

Eddie Applefeld and Downtown Diane both forwarded a link to a video on Streit’s Matzo, it is a teaser for a full length documentary , www.matzofilm.com , being done on this old world business still operating from the lower east side of Manhattan.  It brought back a very fond memory, one stored in my 4 meg RAM brain and by a small miracle avoided the many bad sectors.

It was this time of year, 10 years ago that friends and I were on our sojourn to New York City for the Fancy Food Show.  It was always our goal to try out the newest, hottest places to eat on all our trips.  Chef Wylie Dufresne had opened WD50 that April to rave reviews.  In fact, Chef Dufresne just won the James Beard Award for 2013 Best Chef in New York City.

Happy Birthday Julia Child - 100 years

Julia Child may be gone in body but in spirit she will live forever. Today, August 15 would have been her 100th birthday.

There are few who don’t know of Julia Child but for the most of you, the culinary world as was the world was a better place because of her. Public Broadcasting has all kinds of celebrations going on and you can read my story right HERE. Have fun with the attached video that PBS has put together, a musical remix of Julia – quite clever..

Saval sent two kids to investigate what’s inside a regular hot dog

Saval Foods, a name I see when I drive the Capital Beltway on my drive home on the inner loop between Connecticut Avenue and route 29 on a road marker is seen more often at your favorite deli counter. What started with a quality corned beef in 1932 grew to the Saval deli line.  I love their beef brisket, no one does it better.

Baltimore food history factoid – the Original Table Crumber

An evening out celebrating our anniversary and the husband’s birthday had us at the ever delightful, full service Prime Rib Restaurant last night.

I don’t know about your dinner conversations with your husband, wife or life partner but in our marriage of 29 years it isn’t overly stimulating.  It isn’t about world affairs, finances or even children. My life centers around food and the food industry and the husband’s interests are the History Channel, flea markets, taking naps and World War II but they do say opposites attract.   Are you getting my drift?
