Have a bloody New Year – Bad Decision style

This whole column is inspired by a tweet from a local bar owner and bartender, John Reusing of Bad Decisions, @bad_decisions, who said “fresh blood oranges! its one of my favorite things to make drinks with- who else is excited?” I was excited and tweeted back under my Twitter moniker @daracooks and that was the seed that germinated into this post. With your New Year’s Eve and Day celebrations at hand we thought you might enjoy making it a bloody celebration. John, a very talented mixologist, has put together three recipes for cocktails containing blood oranges

Gooey, Chewy, Crunchy Munchie – a golden opportunity

Isn’t the Mallow Munchies™ chef adorable, how can you resist his smile? Well it is hard to resist Mallow Munchies ™ as well. As their website says and I, a consumer of said culinary delights concur, “not your grandmother’s crispy rice snacks.” Mallow Munchies ™ are all-natural, using marshmallows made from scratch, Kosher gelatin, and no preservatives. As their tag line states: Gooey, Chewy, Crunchy, Munchie. For some strange reason I keep hearing the song Hair in my head when I say those four words, but I digress.

Mini rant - mini knishes

Because of the holiday and peace on earth and good will to man I’ve held off on this mini rant. So here is the story. I go to a specialty store to pick up their mini-meat knishes. Phillips Seafood Restaurant – New Chef – New Menu Items

I don’t think I’m wrong in stating that a good number of us Baltimoreans think of Phillips Seafood Restaurant in Harborplace as a tourist destination – we forget to think of it as a go-to-place for local dining. It really didn’t cross my mind to go there for dinner. When you are part of a restaurant family that has been around for over 50 years and Phillips Seafood Restaurant at Harborplace since back in the 80’s, there is a basis for your longevity. I have recently re-evaluated Phillips as a regular dining destination for Baltimoreans.

Best chocolate cake EVER - recipe

From time-to-time, I help out a chef friend and work in her kitchen in Washington DC as her “kitchen slave” or in the French kitchen brigade vernacular, I teeter between commis, tournant or marmiton. Beaujolais Nouveau is a red wine produced in the Beaujolais region of France using the Gamay grapes. This is a wine that is rushed to market and released on the third Thursday of November every year. It has little time to ferment or to build tannins and offers a fruitier flavor. This is not a wine that you keep in your wine rack for long periods of time; it should be consumed within the year of production.

Having so many talented women chefs and restaurateurs under one roof at the 2009 conference inspired me to ask the question, why food? For me food is the equivalent of love. It was a time to share our stories of the day and feel the warmth of family.

Man versus Food Baltimore episode premieres tonight on the Travel Channel

For a short, previously svelte person, I have a “healthy” appetite. My late mother-in-law used to say I ate like a stevedore. It was never an appetite large enough that I would enter an eating contest and make money, nor do I think I would admit it here if I did. Eating contests brings me to Adam Richman host, star and glutton of Man Vs. Food on the Travel Channel. Here is a man with an appetite who takes eating challenges seriously enough to tackle a 10 lb burger, a pizza the size of a conference table or the omelet that ate the world. “HUGE man,” I say and “HOT too” with habanero and scotch bonnet peppers, heat off the Richter scale.

What is your experience with dirty restaurant bathrooms?

I've seen some pretty bad restaurant bathrooms in my day. The ones with no towels, no hand driers and you look around the room looking for anything to dry your hands. At last you settle for the toilet paper that crumbles in to snow like pieces of air and half stick to your hand that you can't shake off. The partially flushing toilet and the trash can overflowing with paper, real turn offs.
