A conversation Thanksgiving with the neighbors’ son who lives in the Hampton – Newport News area of Virginia got me to thinking about bar-b-que, Pierce’s Pitt Bar-B-Que down in Williamsburg. Since then I have had bar-b-que on the brain..
Executive Chef Sara Moulton is known not only for her twenty five years at Gourmet Magazine but as a Food Network star for her Cooking Live, Cooking Live Primetime shows, food editor/executive chef for Good Morning America and multiple cookbook author. Sara’s Weeknight Meals is her most recent television endeavor on Public Broadcasting with a companion cookbook. Way before we all heard the news about Gourmet Magazine shuttering their doors, executive chef, Sara Moulton and I had a luncheon date set for the end of October.

In the past couple of weeks I heard from two different Baltimore chefs that the Food Network’s cooking competition show, Chopped, hosted by Ted Allen has approached them to come to New York for an interview. Being food nosy, maybe I should say food curious, I gave the Chopped staff a call.
Baltimore’s Chef Jerry Edwards of Chef’s Expressions Catering was the winner at the National Pork Council’s Taste of Elegance competition this past week. Edwards was the runaway winner with four awards including two for Wine and Food Pairings, the People’s Choice, and the most coveted first prize - the Judge’s Choice which qualifies Jerry to compete for the National Title in May 2010.
Local Ruth’s Chris Steak Houses are introducing their new $5 Prime Time Menu. Kicking off the promotion they are offering FREE samplings of select menu items to food and wine lovers on Wednesday, November 11 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Guests should be seated in the bar and/or patio (weather permitting) areas to enjoy this free sampling. Guests will have a choice of one free Prime Bites item and two Prime Wines by the glass.
Making it one year in the restaurant business is an accomplishment but let’s congratulate The Helmand on their 20th Anniversary. I’ve dined there multiple times and my chef friend from Oregon just ate there on Friday evening and had a marvelous Afghan dinner.
Having so many talented women chefs and restaurateurs under one roof at the 2009 conference inspired me to ask the question, why food? For me food is the equivalent of love. My family believed we all sat around the dinner table, no TV, no newspapers and if there was texting that would have been forbidden as well. It was a time to share our stories of the day and feel the warmth of family.
